Journal club – ME/CFS and Long Covid
You are invited to attend a BACME virtual Journal Club. We plan to present a practical and enjoyable critique of a research paper, accessible and relevant to all clinicians, however research-focused you may be. Given the importance of post-exertional malaise (PEM) and keeping the landscape of ME/CFS and Long COVID in mind, we have chosen an article on PEM applicable to ME/CFS and Long COVID. We will provide a fuller reference list to all.
No experience necessary.
By sharing the experience, we hope members can develop critical appraisal skills and a deeper understanding of how to interpret the research in our specialist field.
Our shared discussion will centre on the relevance and benefit of the research findings and how our practice may change as a result.
Facilitated by Dr Marta Prytys, Clinical Psychologist and Anna Gregorowski, Consultant Nurse.
Article to be reviewed:
Vernon SD, Hartle M, Sullivan K, Bell J, Abbaszadeh S, Unutmaz D, Bateman L. Post-exertional malaise among people with long COVID compared to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Work. 2023;74(4):1179-1186. doi: 10.3233/WOR-220581. PMID: 36911963.
We will explore elements such as the aim of the research, ethics, recruitment, diagnostic criteria, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data collection, analysis and results.
We suggest reading and reviewing the article before we meet so you can bring your thoughts on these aspects, along with themes it discusses.
We will conclude with our view on how this research could impact practice.
Please register by Friday 11 July.
We look forward to welcoming you to Journal Club!
